Many people don’t understand how links...

Lessons Learnt From Making The Tumblr Radar Page:

Many people don’t understand how links work. Or opinions. Or grammar.

Many people get offended when their virtual vegetables are described as worthless and respond by stating how many hours, days and months they spend tending these useless, virtual vegetables as justification.

It’s all about the animals.

The your/you’re thing: it’s tricky.

Songs that load up when you visit a blog? Those are still a thing.

I am gay / stupid / anti-Facebook / anti-Farmville / anti-farming / a bigot.

Internets: they’re for learning.

Scams

Inspired by Henry’s post on getting scammed (one of a bunch of great posts he’s written lately), I figured I’d share a little scam that I got to watch recently.
‘Scam’ makes it sound complicated. Hustle? Trick?
The turnstiles at the tube stop near my house open straight onto an open area with payphones. These payphones are just a few feet in front of you when you step through. As I stepped through a few months ago, a guy standing at the payphone in front of me suddenly leaned forward just into my personal space and started talking.
“Hey, you got any change? For the phone?”
He was cupping the phone to his chest, as if he were already on a call.
“It’s my daughter. It’s her birthday. She’s sick. Any change?”
I had my wallet out still, having used it to get through the turnstiles and his sudden question took me by surprise. I held my hand up to look through the change and he quickly stepped forward and took two 50p coins out my hand before muttering, “Thanks” and turning away to the payphone.
I was slightly stunned, so I simply walked away, and it only took a moment to realise how false his story sounded. I went to get groceries and on the way back decided to confirm whether I’d just been scammed out of a quid.
Sure enough, he was still there and working his routine every few minutes on the next group of people. Their reaction was the same as mine: surprise, the wallet already out, and he’d take their change and immediately turn away.
He had the perfect setup - people who’d ignore or dismiss him on the street were so surprised at a moment when they weren’t expecting it, their personal space just a little invaded, the money already out so social obligation was a little more pressing than normal, and a new wave of suckers every time a train stopped.
I only watched him for a few minutes, but I’m willing to bet he was making more than minimum wage just standing at that payphone.
If you want to see a fascinating insight into something similiar, this breakdown of Derren Brown performing a ‘Russian Scam’ is interesting.

(Also, Henry, if you’re reading this: if it’s any consolation, I’ve been scammed as well, a lot more than the story above and for more than you were, and it sucked. Not because I lost a pretty small amount of cash, but because, more than anything else, I felt angry with myself - for being taken, for being ‘naive’ (and man, how I hated it when friends used that phrase when attempting to console me) and for being ‘stupid’. It happens. The people who do this stuff are scum - using the fact you’re just a decent goddamn human being to take what it took you only a small amount of time to earn. I took consolation in the fact that I could make the money back, but that they’ll always be assholes.)

angleofattack:

The secret to Farmville’s popularity is neither gameplay nor aesthetics. Farmville is popular because in entangles users in a web of social obligations. When users log into Facebook, they are reminded that their neighbors have sent them gifts, posted bonuses on their walls, and helped with each others’ farms. In turn, they are obligated to return the courtesies. As the French sociologist Marcel Mauss tells us, gifts are never free: they bind the giver and receiver in a loop of reciprocity. It is rude to refuse a gift, and ruder still to not return the kindness. We play Farmville, then, because we are trying to be good to one another. We play Farmville because we are polite, cultivated people.

Interesting thinking on why Farmville is so popular and such a bad idea.

Still, at least not everyone is buying into this ‘app / app marketplace’ trend.Oh,...

Still, at least not everyone is buying into this ‘app / app marketplace’ trend.
Oh, wait…

A person would happily consider spending $2 on an application.
