Chronicle

I enjoyed it. It’s probably not the best male-aged-18-to-35 movie out there at the moment, but it’s a solid B+ in terms of watchability and enjoyability.

While so many action movies of this kind feel like they were shot with the composition of their trailers in mind, this feels more a solid, thoughtful approach to the kids-getting-powers genre. My only real criticism is that It could perhaps be shorter.

I enjoyed it.
Seeing Owen Wilson play his usual naive / dumbed down self but with a serious bent was a little cloying at times, but not overly so, and it definitely made the character. The story was what I enjoyed the most - its structure and resolution. I appreciate the lack of explanations for some of the more surreal aspects of the story, and I thought the over-stereotyping of his wife’s family was neatly done, cutting through the need for character building for these minor characters without making it seem like bad writing / a shortcut. Some of the portrayals of historical figures grated, with Adrien Brody’s Dali and Kathy Bates’ Gertrude Stein being notable exceptions. Corey Stoll’s Hemingway was fantastic.
All in all, a fun story and worth watching.

I really liked it. 80’s style stripped down to just seering phosphorous pink, edgy synth-pop, and a signature jacket. No 80’s kitsch. Bits of it reminded me a lot of Collateral’s night-driving scenes, an M83 album, and parts of Gosling’s performance really reminded me of Christian Bale’s American Psycho. Some of it was a little overwrought, but yeah. Pretty great.
